Wendy Matthews has spent three decades proving that a great voice doesn’t need to shout. Born in Montreal, she arrived in Australia in 1982 and became one of the country’s most in-demand singers almost immediately, her voice turning up on records by Jimmy Barnes, Tim Finn, Icehouse and Richard Clapton long before she stepped out on her own.
Her solo debut Émigré went double platinum and won her Best Female Artist at the 1990 ARIA Awards. Then came Lily, more than 500,000 copies sold, and The Day You Went Away — the highest-selling single of 1993 and a song that still stops a room the moment it starts. Three ARIA Awards for Best Female Artist. Multi-platinum status on every album she has released.
She moves between jazz, blues, soul, gospel and pop without ever sounding like she is trying something on. The songs simply become hers.
